Speaking at the opening of the preparatory meeting for the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Amina · Mohammed said that as we meet, the west coast of Florida is suffering the catastrophic effects of Hurricane Milton. Humanity is at a critical juncture in the fight against the climate crisis, with the deadline for limiting global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius approaching, and we are witnessing the consequences of inaction in real time.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international treaty to combat global climate change, which was adopted at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 and officially entered into force in 1994. It marks the first comprehensive effort by the international community to combat climate change and aims to prevent anthropogenic activities from having dangerous effects on the climate system.

Since its entry into force, the Conference of the Parties (COP) has been convened annually as the highest decision-making body responsible for assessing the implementation of the Convention and adopting new responses. Important milestones include: the third session of the Conference of the Parties (COP) in 1997, which adopted the Kyoto Protocol, the first legally binding international agreement on emissions reductions; In 2015, the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) adopted the Paris Agreement, an epoch-making global framework agreement on climate change, which aims to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius and strive to limit it to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
